Cindy Carlton Winslow, Secretary/Treasurer Hello to all my family!

First let me alert you to a change in date for our annual Carlton Homestead

reunion.  In an effort to increase our numbers, our president, Robert

Carlton, suggested that we meet on JUNE 19, the third Saturday in June,

instead of the fourth Sat. as we have in the past.  Robert’s brother and

family will be joining us from WA for the first time.  So please note that

change of date on your calendar.

 We really hope you will make an effort to attend this year, as our numbers

have been low in the last few years.  Unfortunately, every year we lose

members of our oldest generation.  There are fewer of these family members

for us to talk to and learn from about our family history.  Happily, we also

have weddings and new babies, so you need to come meet our older and our

newer generations.  We will have the hayride again, and a pool set up for

the kids.  There is a grill if you want to cook, and everyone bring your own

lunch.  There is always extra if you forget to bring something, so don’t let

that stop you from coming.  The Carlton’s are good cooks and always have

plenty to share.

There have been some changes to the log cabin.  A ceiling was added and gas

logs installed.  At that time, it was found that the cedar shingles on the

roof, which are about 15 years old, are decaying and need replacing.  The

recommendation is to replace the shingles with a tin roof, at a cost of

about $3200.  We only have $1246 in the treasury, but our taxes, and summer

upkeep (mowing, bug control, reunion expenses) will eat into that amount.

So you can see that is urgent that you help support this project. I hope we

can count on you for a donation to fix the roof of our family homestead.

You can mail it to me, Cindy Winslow (address below), or you can come to the

reunion and donate then.  If each family gave something, we could raise that

much in no time.

With the addition of gas logs, the cabin can now be used in winter months.

So we plan to have a Christmas party in the cabin on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4 at

2:00.  If you can make it, wonderful!  Please call or email me and let me

know you are coming so we can have enough refreshments.

The other date to keep in mind is our Fall meeting on Sunday, October 3 at

2:00.  We would love to have you join us. Oct. 2 is the Brushy Mountain

Apple Festival in North Wilkesboro which is a fun event.  Come for the

Festival and stay for our meeting.

If you need names of local motels, restaurants, or local things to do, just

give me a call or email me.  If you have an email address, I would really

appreciate you sending it to me so I could email you the newsletter and

events.  It will save the treasury money if I do not have to make copies and

mail letters.  Please remember a donation for the roof.   And mark the dates

on your calendar for the reunion on June 19, the Fall meeting on Oct. 3, and

the Christmas party on Dec. 4. Hope to see you soon.

The Annual Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club owns, operates, and organizes the event each year. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is not just this club's largest fundraiser, but has become a one of Wilkes County's biggest fundraisers. Over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations participate in the festival. For many of them, the festival has become the biggest fundraiser of the year. Over 160,000 people visit this festival during the day and it's FREE.

The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro, NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, 4 different music stages consisting of Blue Grass, Country, Folk, Gospel, and Appalachian Heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. When walking through the streets of the festival observing and buying lots of the arts and crafts, Appalachian dulcimers can be heard while the smells of the variety of foods are enticing everyone's appetites. Let us not forget the apples, apples, and apples. Local apple growers set up throughout the festival selling their apples, apple cider, and dried apples. After all, this festival also pays tribute to the fruit grown and harvested each fall by apple orchardists from Northwestern North Carolina.

So come join the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club in the Annual Brushy Mountain Apple Festival this year in downtown North Wilkesboro, NC from 8 AM to 5 PM. The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club Information Booth located at the intersection of Main and 9th Street will have copies of the Souvenir Program and Guide filled with schedules of music, dancing, locations of exhibitors, food concessions, apple recipes, stories and tales about the community and more. The Wilkes Art Council Juried section will be located on 9th Street.

Pre-festival activities begin with “Apple Jam" at 6:00 PM on Friday night, with "live entertainment" at the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club’s Brushy Mountain Apple Festival Park. This is located at the corner of 10th and Main Streets. So come early bringing your chairs, family and friends to enjoy a great evening kicking off this year’s Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. There will be a few food vendors set up along with the local restaurants available for dinner.

The reunion is at the Carlton cabin at Boomer at 10:00 a.m. on third Saturday,

Besides eating, and meeting all the cousins and other kin, the
activities include going up on the mountain to see the graveyard and
graves of Peter Saner, Charles and Sarah Saner Carlton, etc. The land
the cemetery is on is retained by the family, but the original family
land on Warrior Creek has been divided up and sold.

The surrounding area is beautiful. Pete and Lael Carlton's house,
across the road from the cabin, looks out over a huge bottom where they
raise cattle and hay. The hill next to their house is the second best
hang-gliding spot in North Carolina (next to Kill Devil Hill).
Hang-gliders come from all over North Carolina and were there during one
of our visits in October. Very colorful and a little scary.

The site of the old mill is up the road and although the mill is gone
(the millstones are now benches in front of the cabin) the creek and
rocks are the kids' favorite thing. They wear bathing suits under their
clothes and after dinner the kids go up there and wade and splash around
(with parents watching, of course).
